Tradition and Heritage in the Heart of Andalusia

Through the passion of its Dutch founders for Andalusian heritage and autochthonous animal breeds, Rondalucia has respected and restored local traditions, from the techniques used to renovate ancient homesteads and the 19th-century hacienda building, to the attempt to return the land to its most natural state. Breeding Retinta cattle and Pure Bred Spanish horses has formed the backbone of this noble project. The high quality of the Retinta stock is testament to the labour of love of the Mesdag family who throughout four decades have dedicated themselves to the conservation and improvement of one of the region’s most specific cultural legacies.

The Region
Discover Andalusia
There are few places in Western Europe that remain as evocative as Andalusia, the region surrounding El Hondon. The white villages, some of which are balanced on rocky precipices, are accompanied by myriad topographical surprises such as the ever-changing hues of the earth, the shifts between stretches of land rising to a far horizon and secret valleys of terraced pastures, the alternating grazing and agricultural lands. A goat climbing a fig tree over here, a mule and three mares tethered on golden stubble over there; airborne eagles, falcons or vultures are the backdrop. Andalusia is also known for its spectacular Catholic festivals, whether through the celebration of the local saint or Semana Santa, Easter Holy Week. Bullfighting and horse carriages are also rooted in the feria life of the Southern towns. The landscapes inspired Ernest Hemingway’s writing as he worked on Death in the Afternoon; Eastern Andalusia also motivated former Genesis drummer Chris Stewart to buy a decrepit farm and chronicle the idiosyncrasies of his new home patch.
The Village
The Wonders of Ronda
Ronda, at a distance of 14km from the farm, is one of the most emblematic of Andalusia’s white towns; an icon perched on the spectacular gorge of El Tajo canyon. Its strategic position made it a stronghold far before Roman times, with the remains of successive European civilizations plain to see in the town’s architecture, culture and legends. The near-by caves of Benaojan transport one further back in time to the Palaeolithic and Neolithic periods. Ronda also has a long history with bulls. In the Middle Ages they ran wild in the hills where they were hunted and fought; prestige was the victor’s prize. The desire to show off bullfighting skills in public led to the creation of the art: Ronda has one of the two oldest bullrings in the country, where the rules of the tradition were classified more than 300 years ago.
